At the Distant Worlds: Music of Final Fantasy concert in Pittsburgh on August 1, conductor Arnie Roth dropped a bit of shocking news: a Final Fantasy XII remake is in the works.
The bit came during his first monologue, where he introduced himself and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Mendelssohn Choir. Roth jumped in by referencing the hype for the Final Fantasy VII remake, before saying, “And there’s a Final Fantasy XII remake on the way, too, and that’s coming out soon,” and he concluded by expressing excitement for Final Fantasy XIV.
The crowd was clearly surprised by the “announcement.” While Roth probably meant “remaster,” like the FFX | X-2 HD versions—FFXII is the only Final Fantasy game currently unavailable on modern consoles—the news is still a bit suspect.
However, FFXII’s composer, Hitoshi Sakimoto, attended the event in Pittsburgh. He was introduced ahead of the announcements, so it would seem like a huge oversight for Roth to reveal something so bold with someone attached to the project there.
