We are pleased to announce the debut of the first installment of the Invisibility Blues series, along with its new home here on NYMG. In this first episode, we look at character creation in a variety of games, focusing on selectable features, game lore, and the potential impacts of limitations.
We would like to thank Shareef Jackson for contributing thoughts on the topic, and Mike Moody and Tim Childree for creating the music we’ll be using for the series. We’ll be following up on this topic with a second video soon (there was too much for just one episode!), and we’re happy to announce that the backer-chosen topics rounding out the series are Men of Color and Intersectionality and The Myth of the White Messiah. Check the Invisibility Blues site for the full list of episode themes, transcripts, and more. (Update, October 18: We’ve added an annotation to adjust a missing title, but if you’d like to screen this video or use it for educational purposes, get in touch and we’ll get you an updated copy.)

Yay! Just watched it, and it’s really great!! Although I’m not a gamer, so much of this discussion relates to other things I’m interested in… I love that you mentioned curly hair! One question that popped into my head was, what about age? Will options for avatars age as gamers age? Ha! I’m looking forward to the next video! Cheers!
