After numerous fits and starts we’re back! Welcome to the second issue of NYMG Journal (Vol. 1 no. 2). While the pieces in this second issue may be more traditional in their form I find that they are still addressing areas of game studies that have been oft neglected.
Jaime L. McDaniel’s piece “Accessibility and Ableism in Tabletop Business Games” looks at the use of business games as skill and team building activities and considers how these games promote the concept of an ideal working. McDaniel builds upon accessibility theory and procedural rhetoric to show how these games that are meant to strengthen teams might actually be exclusionary.
Anna Burns’ piece “A Case Study of Transgender Representation in Video Games: Mass Effect’s Hainly Abrams” looks at transgender representation in Bioware’s 2017 game Mass Effect: Andromedia. Burns’ argues that Hainly Abrams’ characterization has both positive and negative aspects and considers just whose gaze she was created for.
Again I’d like to thank the amazing board of reviewers who have given freely of their time and expertise to offer constructive feedback for our authors. Thank you also to the authors who have shared their work with us. I hope that you all enjoy this issue as much as we have enjoyed putting it together for you.
