Interested in writing news stories about gaming and geek culture? We’re looking for a few good writers as we move into a new era — a redesigned site, a stronger focus on presentation, and greater engagement with the industry and community — and we need strong additions to the team who can help us carry our mission of inclusive feminism, analysis, and critique (with the occasional side of snark).
Interested applicants should be prepared to write well, with an understanding of gaming, tech, and culture, but experience is not necessary; we will guide you in producing content for our site. This is a volunteer position with an expectation of only 1-3 news posts per week, and opportunities for growth into features, reviews, interviews, and more.
To apply, please send a letter of interest, bio, and a short writing sample. If you have clips from or links to work written for other venues that seem like it would be a good fit for our site, include that; if not, please write a short piece reporting on a relevant happening from the last few weeks. E-mail your packet for consideration as a doc, or a PDF, but please don’t just send us a list of links without any real explanation. Please be sure to use the subject line NEWS WRITER APPLICATION (or we might miss your e-mail). We will consider all applications until our needs are filled.
We’re sorry we can’t pay you. We are all writers and we know how it is. We hope someday this will be more than a volunteer operation, but for now, we’re all in the same boat. However, this is a simple, easily managed and low-stakes way to get reporting experience. Please note, however, we are not looking for generic news about just any old thing. News and culture reports should appeal to an audience interested in critical, inclusive perspectives. Since we have not often presented news coverage in the past (we’re all too focused on other work!), here are a few samples from other sites illustrating the kind of work we’re looking for:
